New office, etc.

I've transferred to the brand-spanking-new office of the Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture. I'm still with PhilRice, just focusing on the Pinoy Farmers' Internet project. I'll be handling the portal.

The portal design has gone through four revisions, and we're finally settling down on this one. I'll probably streamlining it since it loads slowly even on my DSL connection. Probably has something to do with the firewall problem we're having at the NOC.

Oh, well. At least it's already up, with the initial offerings such as knowledge products, e-learning modules and diagnostic tools. There's still a long way to go, though, as we've barely touched on the thriving content that we will offer our clientele, the extension workers and farmers.

If we go by the UN classification, we're still at Stage 2 -- web presence. In the coming months, we'll be deploying more content and more features. Among which are what I've discussed earlier with the project director:

  1. A virtual learning environment for course delivery. The system is currently under development by ASTI.

  2. An SMS service for up-to-date and on-demand information bits. I was very excited to find out that the bright ones at ASTI had developed a PCI-based GSM modem from cheap cellphone parts. This will be interfaced with Kannel, an open source software for SMS.

  3. The PhilRice National R&D Conference is coming up, and there will surely be lots of content to be posted there.

  4. The other partners have also initiated their own content development programs for the Open Academy. By the end of the year, the portal would have expanded its focus not only on rice, but on other crops and commodities as well.

It's an exciting period, and I look forward to it. I feel revived after a somewhat long hiatus from development.
