Linux, open source power PhilRice Biotech IPR training center

PhilRice, Science City of Muñoz — The recently inaugurated Biotechnology IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) Training Center here at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) draws its computing power from Linux and other open source software.


IT experts from the PhilRice Information and Communication Technology Division (ICTD) led the installation of thirty thin clients – diskless computer workstations whose resources and application software are ran from a central server – running Debian-based Ubuntu Linux to provide the computing resources for the center. Training participants can browse the Internet using Mozilla Firefox, use OpenOffice.org to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and run a host of other free open source applications on the Linux operating system.
