Yes, but is it art?

Apparently, a 12-year-old boy didn't think so.

The boy (who wouldn't stand a rat's chance in Singapore) stuck gum on a $1.5-million abstract painting on exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The gum left a stain on the "The Bay" by Helen Frankenthaler. Curators and restoration experts are still researching the chemical composition of the gum to decide which solvent to use.

The painting, not the gum.

The painting -- though it's purity has been stained (heh, just had to say that, sorry) -- is "going to be fine," museum authorities said.

The boy, meanwhile, is probably off to MOMA or the Louvre, after being suspended from school. He's got a promising career ahead of him. via Boing Boing.

  1. I'm from Dearborn, Mi, just outside of Detroit where I attended Fordson Highschool (dropout/GED). During the 90's at some point, there was a field trip to the D.I.A. where a notorious incident took place involving a couple students fighting each other, and damaging some classical masterpiece, which resulted in the permanent ban of our school from the museum.

  2. Boy, D. I. A. must be a magnet for juvenile deliquents, then. :P
