Geek, and proud of it!

Here's a nifty idea: use your lappy's lid as ad space. Uber-geek-girl Sacha did just that: she's selling ad space on her laptop lid . She's off to BarCampEarthToronto, and well, that's about as much exposure you'll ever need. Give it a try. Digg the story .

On PTB: Content delivery via internet shops

I've posted on Pinoy Tech Blog my thoughts on delivering services and content through internet rental shops.

Haven

I'm at the Tech Lounge in Robinson's Galleria. Free WiFi! Yay. A while ago, I was at Toys 'R' Us -- a kid's dream-come-true. (And a parent's budget nightmare. Hehe.) I bought a Vtec "laptop" for Gab, who's turning five on Monday . But don't tell him yet. It's a surprise. Anyway: I was at TRU. Man, toy heaven. Couldn't help myself: bought a Little Einstein science kit (more for me than for Gab), a little wood box puzzle, and some 3D dinosaur puzzles. What can I say? I'm a geek, and a fun one at that. No worthy diecasts there, though. (I should have mentioned: I collect diecast Mini Coopers on the side.) Lots of Hotwheels and Fastlanes, and a few Cararamas, Tomicas and Jada -- but no diecast Minis! Grr. I'm never going back to TRU. Not!

Snapshots

My wife just had an ultrasound exam to determine her gestation period. The baby's 13 weeks. Expected date of conception: 9 February 2007. My son got perfect scores in his first quizzes. Just like his tatay... My sister in Dubai now holds a great job at the Media City. Hopefully, she'll be able to hold on to this one a bit longer than the previous ones. Heh. I found the secret to Chicken Teriyaki: the sauce. :P Mama Sita, donde esta el salsa de teriyaki? I also found the perfect time to write: at 3:00 AM. I finally got around to folding my son's origami safari animals. Ang galing ko daw. Heh, anak, wait 'til you get older, and tell me that again. It's a holiday in Cork (Ireland -- my work's counterpart unit) on Monday, so it's a holiday for me as well. I'm looking forward to see the folks at Pinoy.Tech.Blog on 9 August at Circles Shangri-la Edsa.

Demystifying LDAP If you've been struggling to understand what LDAP is and how it can be useful to you without picking up a 1,000-page tome, look no further. LDAP is great for some problems, pretty good for some others, and completely inappropriate for yet another batch of / reference tcp/ip ldap network

Offline blogging

I'm currently blogging offline, using w.bloggar. I don't have an internet connection in my apartment in Pasig (and I'm not likely to get one -- too expensive and the logistics of applying for a fixed line is such a bother). I usually connect to the internet from work. I still haven't tried WiFi on Mathilda. I'll probably do that tomorrow. I'm thinking about getting PLDT WeRoam or Globe Visibility. I called Visibility, alas, they're open for corporate accounts only. As for PLDT, I tried several times but got busy tones on their hotline -- it's PLDT, what do you expect? My previous experience with WeRoam in my former workplace was just so-so, but at least I was mobile. I haven't tried Visibility, but from a former colleague's experience, it failed miserably, specially in Mindanao. (Not that I'd be going there in the near future, still it tells something about the service. But they have probably improved since that was, what, two months ago.) Fo...

I was contemplating on running OS X on Mathilda, based on Nox's suggestion. Only: (1) I don't have a "legal" (heck, even an illegal) installer; and (2) I'm too chicken to try it out just yet. So I did the next best thing: install FlyAKiteOSX on a Windows XP image in VMWare. Heh. The installation was a breeze. There was a selection of what to install. I skipped a restore point -- I just took a snapshot in VMWare. Then a few clicks after that, it was installing. It took a bit with VMWare as Mathilda was really taxed by now. She only has 40GB, and more than half is already spent. I was also running other apps as well. But after about five minutes, I rebooted and voila! "Welcome to Windows", it says. Heh. :P The performance was a bit slow. I had to turn off the shadowing thingamajig. But it was cool to behold. It's still Windows, though. All that was changed was the eyecandy. Now, if only I can borrow an OS X DVD... [tags]mac, hacks, tech, cool[tags]
