Bowling night

Our teams (Europe, Asia, and Australia) had bowling night at Paeng's Bowl here in Eastwood. My group won the first two games, but went away a tad bit behind in the final two. It was a close fight, though -- only 15 pinfalls short. Heh. I was switching between a number 9 and number 11 ball between frames, so maybe that took my game hand off. (Hay, excuses, excuses.) Rematch! :D

Work in progress

I've finally gotten down to putting up some notes from my RHCT training. They're posted in my wiki over there yonder. Caveat: it's a work in progress, so it's very incomplete. I've only managed to place three sections (intro to RH, installation, and boot sequence). Check this space for updates. Better yet, contribute to the wiki. :)

Life is good

My wife showed me printouts of the prenatal ultrasound she had for our new baby -- it's a healthy baby boy! Gab and I made a kite. It didn't fly really well, but Gab was happy as a bee. His lolo bought him a decent-looking one, a thin plastic thingie with gossamer-like wings. Flew strong, that one. It was fun. (It was Gab's first time to fly a kite, and mine after, oh, about 20 years.) After kite-flying, we had ice cream. What is it with ice cream and white shirts? Both are bound to meet each other eventually -- never fails. :P Sunday, we went to church. Gab was yawning through the sermon, but he had this really good prayer about his baby brother. We're not religious, Peng (my wife) and I, and we plan not to impose anything on our sons. But seeing that Gab is discovering it himself, it gives us this warm fuzzy feeling inside that we're okay parents so far. After church, we were off to the mall to buy toys for Gab, and clothes and other baby thingies for th...

Mythbusting

Pressing the elevator button repeatedly does not make the elevator go down (or up) faster.

May lalaki ang misis ko!*

She sneaked up on me. She did it on her own. And she told me over the phone. (Err, rhyme 'yun, a. Heh.) I'm talking about taking an ultrasound exam to determine the sex of our new baby, of course. It's official: we have another boy. We were hoping for a baby girl, but we gladly accept whatever God gives. :) We thank Him for keeping the baby healthy and safe. *For non-Filipino readers, the title is roughly translated, "My wife's got a man!" (or more appropriate a boy), but then you'd miss the subtlety of layers and subcontexts in the language. ;)

Passed the RHCT exam

Just checked my office mail and found out that I passed the RH133 exam -- I'm now a Red Hat Certified Technician . Yay! I'll be gunning for RHCE by first quarter of next year.

Am on RHCT training

(Blogging through Touch Solutions' free WiFi connection. :)) Just finished the first part (Troubleshooting and system maintenance) of the Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) certification exam. In the end, experience really is the best teacher. :) On to the second part (Installation and configuration) in an hour. More on this later. (I'll also post my notes on the training later here or in my wiki.)

Backing up Wordpress database

I'm an O.C. and a paranoid (bad combination, I know), and I've learned from experience that there's nothing like a good backup strategy to cover your bases. So I regularly back everything up, but unlike Linus, I don't have a readily available FTP server to do that. I do have a GMail account, though, so that's the next best thing. Below is my script to back up Coredump's SQL database: #!/bin/sh DBNAME=database_name DBUSER=username DBPASS=password DBHOST=database_host EMAIL="[email protected]" SUBJECT="SQLbackup" mysqldump --opt -u $DBUSER -p$DBPASS -h $DBHOST $DBNAME > backup.sql gzip -9 backup.sql DATE=`date +%Y%m%d`; mv backup.sql.gz backup-$DATE.sql.gz echo 'SQL backup is attached.' | mutt $EMAIL -s $SUBJECT -a backup-$DATE.sql.gz rm backup-$DATE.sql.gz Change the user information above (from wp-config.php ), chmod 711 the script, and plug it in crontab like so: @weekly $HOME/path/to/script >/dev/null 2>&1 In GMail, cr...

Using non-interactive FTP

We have a secret (therefore, widely known and very popular) stash of films and TV series episodes somewhere in the office. This clandestine repository is an FTP server, which probably gets more traffic than the various issue tracking and CRM systems we use around here. Sometimes, though, it gets tedious logging on to the server, checking for new additions, before finding out what new files to download. Good thing the pirates were sane enough to come up with a "What's new" page in the root of the FTP server's public directory. So, I whipped up a very simple script that would fetch this file: #!/bin/sh ftp pirate.ftp user username password get whatsnew.txt quit EOT I placed the above in a crontab, executed daily at early dawn. Then, it's just a matter of grep ping for my faves and downloading them promptly. The download could be automated as well, but it's a bit tedious and requires more braincells than I can dedicate for this sort of work -- much easier to just...

Quickie roundup

Starting today, we're on DST, so a one-hour shift in the work sked. Yaiks. Last weekend, we were off to Taal Vista Lodge in Tagaytay for the Tech University, a two-day company event. The first day started off with an "Amazing Race"-style tech challenge -- a battle of wits to solve real-world cases in 30 minutes or less. At stake: a 4GB iPod nano for each group member (five per group, two categories, SMB and enterprise). Unfortunately, we didn't win, so there goes the nano. :P Sunday was capped with a teambuilding activity, complete with a motivational talk by APO Jim Paredes (something about creativity -- I didn't get to go through that one straight on, had to chow on the sumptuous buffet breakfast at the Cafe-on-the-ridge, heh). Got sick on purpose yesterday, so I could be with Peng and Gab at home. I really needed that. Tiyo Paeng was raging, so we snuggled in bed, and went through three "American Tail" DVDs (Gab's current fave). Didn't...
