Dumb

In the news this evening: a battallion of Philippine marines hole up in their Fort Bonifacio headquarters to protest the relief of their commandant. Meanwhile, in Malacañang, presidential chief of staff Mike Defensor urges media not to "provide exposure" to the dissidents in what's brewing to be a standoff in Fort Bonifacio. Hello? Hey, Mike, there's such a thing as press freedom -- specifically, the right against prior restraint. Or is even that not allowed anymore during the de-facto martial law, er, "state of emergency"?

Playing with GPS

Image
I'm playing with a Garmin GPS tracker I borrowed from work. Well, it's not entirely play because I'm also getting points of interest to be uploaded to the Philippine AgriInfo Map project I'm toying with. Although a bit worn and old, the device is very easy to use. I've gathered a few waypoints, mostly road crossings and bridges for now. Later, I'll add in establishments such as hospitals, gas stations, malls, among others. I used MapBuilder to initially plot the points in Google Maps . This is in preparation for an XML-based scheme that I will use for the AgriInfo Map. It's not much, but it's a start, so here it is . I'm also thinking of using the GPS to calibrate some of the waypoints Migs Paraz has gathered during his Google Maps Christmas trip using his Smart LBS project. I'll reserve that for a later trip.

Oh, no, Keanu Reeves is at it again!

Remember Johnny Mnemonic, and how Reeves mangled it? Brace yourself, because he's doing Philip K. Dick's cyberpunk book , A Scanner Darkly (screenplay and direction by Richard Linklater ( Dazed and confused , Before Sunrise )). Here's a preview trailer: Reminds me of a recent thread on PLUG-Misc . I haven't read the book, but I do hope they do cyberpunk right this time. Film renditions of PKD's work have been okay so far: Blade Runner , Minority Report and Paycheck were cool flicks. Wished they'd do more SF movies. The sneak peek looks promising, though -- it has that gritty, drug-induced feel to it.

'The Dutch' talks about writing

Elmore Leonard ("Be Cool", "Get Shorty", "Outtasight", among others) has written a New York Times essay on his 10 rules on writing . "Being a good author is a disappearing act," he says. The rules are not for those who love the sound of their own voices, but for those who want to "show rather than tell what's taking place in the story." Now, I don't pretend to be a writer -- and even if I was, I'm sure not a good one -- but Leonard's tips, like his writing, are easy enough to understand and follow. And what is "hoopteddoodle", you ask? Let Steinbeck tell you .

Your mail, hosted by Google?

Today in Pinoy Tech Blog , I've posted about a speculation that Google will be doing mail hosting for domains . Cool, but the p-word raises eyebrows. Now, Google is always speculation-material (Google Linux comes to mind), but they've also been known for creating innovations that somehow change the way people use the web.

New meaning for 'snail mail'

Image
Via Boing Boing : At the recent KinnerNet 2005 [Israeli version of Foo Camp ], [co-founder Yossi] Vardi and his pals Shimon Schocken and Ami Ben-Basat demonstrated that snails can be faster at data delivery than both ADSL and pigeons. Called SNAP ( SNAil-based data transfer Protocol ), the system uses "biological carriers, and, for the first time, taking advantages of the unique merits of the wheel for data transfer." Test results showed that SNAP (at 37,000 kbps) is significantly faster than ADSL (1,500 kbps) and WiFly TCP (Transmission by Carrier Pigeons, also known as "IP over Avian Carrier") (2,270 kbps), which has a glaring limitation of not being able to "fly through Windows". A distinct disadvantage of SNAP is the risk of DOS (denial-of-service), "most notably in France, (where) culinary habits may pose a risk -- French users will have to choose whether they want to be served data-ex-cargo or an escargot."

ICT caravan

Very busy with the Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture . We are organizing an "ICT caravan", a road tour of sorts that will span the archipelago (naks!), to spread ICT and IT-based agriculture knowledge to extension workers. This will happen in March. The caravan will have five legs: Ilocos region, Southern Tagalog, Bicol region, Northern Mindanao, and Davao provinces. Five buses from the DOST SEI (their Mobile ICT classroom ) will be equipped with internet connection -- either through WeRoam or via WiFi in nearby internet cafes -- and travel to different municipalities where one-day training on basic computer skills will be held. We're currently looking for sponsors -- we're eyeing local government agencies and telcos -- to cover part of the costs. The Pinoy Farmers Internet will feature a day-to-day journal of the caravan. We will be assigning bloggers per team so they can post images and thoughts on the web. We will be teaching extension workers to blog, too, ...

Move on

With the post below, I'm signalling my move to a new (Wordpressed) Coredump . I'll be switching feeds to the new site, so apologies in advance if there will be a bit of RSS flooding. (Then again, I've been testing the new feed courtesy of Feedburner.com, and it's holding up pretty well.) I'm not leaving Blogger behind. I've opened this account in May 2003 (way before it was acquired by Google), but it's not just for sentimental reasons that I'll be maintaining this. My new host (through the kindness of Ramil Sagum ) is also temporary, as I'm setting my sights on having my own domain (budget and time willing). (Tells you something about impermanence. ;)) This site will remain as a launchpad to new homes. Think of this as my rallying point: for all my travails and travels on the web, eventually, I'll come back here. So, move on, folks. Say goodbye to Blogspotted Coredump (but do visit once in a while), and give a "hoy!" to Coredump, rem...

Lesser evil?

Joining the fray in the Google China censorship (soon-to-be?) debacle. I'd like to put things in perspective, so a chronology is in order: 24 January 2005. Google agrees to censor sites that are objectionable to the Chinese government, puts up a Chinese domain, Google.cn. Google draws the ire of the community for its "Great (fire)wall of China" compromise, resulting in protests . Two days later, the search giant issues a policy statement , saying that "filtering search results clearly compromised (its) mission, (but) failing to offer search at all is far more severe." Several articles have cropped up to test how extensive Google.cn filtering (read: censorship) is done. In the span of two days, all focus is on China (that is, Google in China). Or maybe not . There are also contrarian views and begrudging respect that, at least, Google is being transparent about what it intends to do with its Chinese domain. Well, here's my take, FWIW. We have to face t...
