Playing with GPS

I'm playing with a Garmin GPS tracker I borrowed from work. Well, it's not entirely play because I'm also getting points of interest to be uploaded to the Philippine AgriInfo Map project I'm toying with.

Although a bit worn and old, the device is very easy to use. I've gathered a few waypoints, mostly road crossings and bridges for now. Later, I'll add in establishments such as hospitals, gas stations, malls, among others.

I used MapBuilder to initially plot the points in Google Maps. This is in preparation for an XML-based scheme that I will use for the AgriInfo Map. It's not much, but it's a start, so here it is.

GPS waypoints plotted in Google Maps

I'm also thinking of using the GPS to calibrate some of the waypoints Migs Paraz has gathered during his Google Maps Christmas trip using his Smart LBS project. I'll reserve that for a later trip.

  1. I have yet to see a location-based services company in the Philippines that uses WEB 2.0 technologies. I previously worked for www.findme.com.ph. They were on the right track3 years ago but somehow got lost. Too bad. There may be a big business opportunity in GPS/WEb technologies.

"They were on the right track, but somehow got lost." Why? By what factors?
